Professionalism Tips for Video Calls
Video calls have become part of everyday life for many employees and understanding how to present oneself in this format is crucial to being successful. While certainly not comprehensive, this list offers some ways to ensure that you leave a great impression on your next virtual meeting.
Wear attire appropriate for the meeting. If you are unsure how formally you should dress, opt for more rather than less professional attire.
Use a professional background. Find a simple image that functions as a background, use the blur feature, or have a plain, neutral-colored wall behind you.
Arrive early. This shows that you are punctual and professional.
Be sure you have a strong internet connection, camera, and microphone. Without these things, it will be difficult to communicate no matter how compelling you are. Check these items in advance.
If you take notes during the meeting, mention it to the person you’re speaking with. This way they understand that you are not getting distracted.
Find good lighting. Natural light is the best way to do this (sitting facing a window). However, if natural light is not available, pick a room with good lighting or consider buying a ring light to illuminate your face during calls.
Smile! Don’t be afraid to show your personality.
Look directly into the camera. It can be tempting to watch the person you’re speaking to on the screen, but by looking into the camera it will appear more to them as if you were making eye contact.
If possible, safely stack your computer on books or another object. This brings the camera higher, so you avoid looking down to see it.
Don’t be afraid to use hand gestures as you speak.
Find a quiet place to call. Make sure you're in a quiet place where you won't be interrupted. Background noise can be distracting for both you and your caller.
